“Terrorists must be treated with terrorists, we will act firmly,” he began by saying and completely ruled out the possibility of negotiating with him or with any other terrorist since “the country is tired of criminals setting the conditions.”

Colón Pico had been arrested just four days before his escape, on January 5. He is accused of kidnapping following expressing his intention to kill the attorney general, Diana Salazar, although his criminal history includes many other crimes. In fact, he is the leader of the most violent criminal group in Ecuador.
Prior to his escape, on January 8, while the prison riots were taking place, he released a video in which he held Salazar and Noboa responsible for his life following learning of the possibility of his transfer to the maximum security prison of La Roca.
