The reboot of Microsoft Fable’s famous RPG saga is eagerly awaited by fans, who have seen very little of it yet. We have just learned that this is not a choice of Microsoft, but of the developers…
Matt Booty, Director of Microsoft Studiosresponded to an interview during PAX West 2022. He notably discussed the silence around the reboot of Fable. It seems he is in disagreement with developers of Playground Games regarding communication around the game.
Fable: Playground Games does not want to show the game yet
Matt Booty dreams of showing you more regarding Fable! The boss of Microsoft studios claims that Fable’s reboot is well under way, and that he would like to be able to present several of his elements right now. However, he explains that it’s the Playground Games devs who want to communicate regarding the game later.
Part of my job is to provide cover for the team, they don’t want to show things early before they’re ready. If there’s a game where that’s sort of reversed, where every time I see something I’m like, “We should show this,” it’s Fable, because there’s a lot of cool stuff.. The team has made it clear that I won’t be able to show anything until it’s ready.
If it’s obviously Matt Booty and Microsoft who make the final decisions, then it seems like they’re listening to what their developers want. If they had really wanted to communicate on Fable, even without the agreement of the studio, they might have, but obviously they wish to follow Playground’s opinion.
Matt Booty is so excited regarding Fable and really wants to show it, but the team has made it clear that he’s not allow to show it until it’s ready.
“All the craft and dedication they brought to Forza, every bit of will be applied to Fable.”

Giving an RPG saga to racing game developers
The Fable reboot is developed on the engine of Forzathe racing game saga that has made Playground Games famous. Incidentally, Matt Booty also detailed how the studio was chosen for this project. Indeed, the studio had so far only been known only for its car games, not for RPGs. The designation of studio therefore surprised a lot of people :
Finally, what I will say regarding Playground Games is that the know-how and dedication they brought to Forza Horizon, all of that is going to be applied to Fable. They understood. Let’s be honest, giving Fable to the racing games team might be a bit of a headache, but they’ve proven they’ve got the idea, and I can’t wait for the time to show off more.
And reboot Fable is scheduled for a date yet unknown on PC and Xbox Series.
