Fabio Quartararo’s Struggles in MotoGP: Falling Out of the Top 10 and Losing Motivation

2023-08-11 05:11:31

Fabio Quartararo experienced a low point in his MotoGP career with 22nd and last place on the grid at Silverstone last weekend. The barely better 21st place in the sprint was followed by a decent race to catch up on Sunday, but after a collision with Luca Marini it was only 15th place again. With this meager yield, the 2021 world champion even fell out of the top 10 in the World Cup table.

Is Quartararo finding it difficult to stay motivated despite his apparent difficulties with the Yamaha M1? “I wouldn’t say I’m losing motivation, but it’s frustrating. Silverstone was a particular nightmare because of qualifying. But it’s generally difficult because I’ve fought for the world championship almost every year – except for my first MotoGP year, but then in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Now we fight for points. This is difficult…”

“I mean, I don’t think Marc has lost his skills after eight titles,” the 24-year-old Frenchman referred to Marc Márquez, another ex-world champion with massive problems this season (ranked 19th in the World Championship without points over the full distance). “It’s difficult and mentally it’s not easy. Because I feel like I’m driving well – but it’s not enough,” added the Yamaha star.

So is the feeling worse than in Fabio’s often difficult Moto2 times? “Yes, because I was always shit in Moto2,” said “El Diablo” bluntly. “This is true. To be honest I haven’t shown anything in Moto2 apart from a couple of races. My victory [beim Catalunya-GP 2018] came at the right moment, but I’ve never fought for the top three in the World Championship in Moto2. I’ll be honest, I haven’t adapted well to Moto2. In MotoGP it was different.”
