Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal Quick Step) won the last stage of the Tour of Belgium ahead of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin–Deceuninck) et Thibau Nys (Trek – Segafredo), au pied de l’Atomium.

As expected, a morning breakaway took shape quite early in the race, as expected, the sprinters’ teammates brought the pack back to less than 15 km from the finish to prepare for the royal sprint. A final wrap wonderfully made by Patrick Lefevere’s team completed by a perfect sprint from Fabio Jakobsen.

As he crossed the line, the reigning European champion pointed his index finger to the sky, in tribute to Gino Maderwho died tragically last Friday on the Tour de Suisse: I unquestionably dedicate this victory to Gino Mäder. He will be missed by all of us. The announcement of this tragic news shocked everyone“, Jakobsen said.”It hasn’t been easy and times will be tough for Gino’s family and friends in particular. He wore the white jersey in the Tour of Spain. I met him before the podium ceremony. Hence my gesture of the finger in the air when I crossed the finish line. It was for him. Cycling is our job and it continues”.

The final victory of this stage race went to Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who forged his success this Saturday during a show of which he has the secret in the Ardennes coast. The Dutch rider had won the queen stage in Durbuy by endorsing at the same time the leader’s jersey of the event.
