A recent victory over Parma turned sour for AC Milan as manager Sérgio Conceição and captain Davide Calabria engaged in a heated exchange following the match. The incident, captured by cameras, sparked immediate concern and drew sharp criticism from former AC Milan and Italian national team coach Fabio Capello. For Capello, the public display was a major red flag.
“Its not normal to see a coach attack one of his players like that in front of everyone,” Capello stated in his column for ‘gazzetta dello sport’.”Of course in football there are discussions, some of them difficult, I’m the first to be aware of that. But it has to be inside, in the dressing room, not in front of the cameras.”
Capello believes the clash symbolizes deeper, more troubling issues within the Milan camp. While both Conceição and Calabria attempted to downplay the incident, capello remained skeptical.“they both appeared in postgame interviews saying everything was fine, but I’m still convinced that situation was a symptom of some obvious tensions,” he asserted. “And more than anything, it shows some of the coach’s nervousness.”
The coach, according to Capello, is struggling to implement his desired playing style. “I think that [Conceição] is having a hard time getting the team to follow him,” Capello observed.”Milan are not doing what the coach asks. They don’t press enough when they lose the ball, they aren’t aggressive, they don’t have the anger and competitiveness necessary to win games.”
Despite five wins from seven matches under Conceição, Capello highlights Milan’s tendency to struggle, needing to fight back in four of those victories. “It’s a team that rather than acting, reacts,” he concluded, suggesting a lack of proactive play and initiative.
Given Capello’s concerns, how do you think Milan’s current squad dynamic might be impacting Conceição’s ability to implement his tactical vision?
