[F1 machine focus]Ferrari F1-75: Side pot shape of another dimension / 2022 F1 machine explanation[F1-Gate .com]

Ferrari’s 2022 F1 machine “F1-75” is equipped with a side pot with a surprisingly original shape that has not been seen in the machines announced so far.

Carlos Sainz said before the announcement that the Ferrari F1-75 “is different from any other car ever announced.” And the meaning became clear in F1-75 announced on Thursday, February 17th.

Besides the slim front, the side pods have a very original shape, showing how Ferrari interprets the new regulation.

The machines announced so far have shown a variety of radiator placements depending on how the side pods and rear are organized.

There are two main routes to accelerate the airflow around the side pods to reach the diffuser as fast as possible. The first is to undercut the side pods and scallop them out in an inverted S shape when viewed from the front. This changes the air pressure and accelerates the flow. The second is to sharply lower the profile of the side pods (high entry / high entry low back style).

Mercedes are new technologies such as Aston Martin, which is placed at the top and has a sharp undercut but throws away the cork bottle, and McLaren, which is placed on the engine cover to realize a tight cork bottle shape but throws away the undercut. It turned out that I was struggling with the placement of the cooling system according to the rules.

But the Ferrari F1-75’s approach is another dimension. Seen from the side, it has a beautiful high entry / low back style and a cork bottle shape with a tightly squeezed rear.

The most characteristic is the side pod. When viewed diagonally from the side, the intake port of the radiator is wrapped in a bodywork with a rounded shape toward the side and opened compactly in the lateral direction. It’s as if the air intake is attached sideways.

The surprise is the shape seen from diagonally above. It is dented as if there was a hole in the top of the side pod. And the exhaust louvers of the radiators arranged almost horizontally are efficiently arranged there. Looking diagonally from behind, you can clearly see the beautiful curvaceous beauty. The air flowing from the louver into this depression should act as a bodywork to reduce drag on the top surface.

The 2022 technical regulations stipulate the position of the superstructure and substructure of the side impact structure strictly, and the height of the substructure must be at least 100 mm. It also stipulates that the two side impact structures must be completely surrounded by bodywork.

Ferrari interprets the rules well and places the radiator horizontally in the center of the machine to clear all of the undercuts, high entry / lowback and cork bottle shapes.

Ferrari has been disappointing fans in a sense when it comes to new car announcements. However, F1-75 is very beautiful. It is one that can be expected to see if the maxim that “a beautiful machine is fast” applies.
