[F1 machine focus]Alfa Romeo C42: Select push rods for both front and rear / 2022 F1 machine explanation[F1-Gate .com]

Alfa Romeo F1’s 2022 F1 machine “C42” is the only new car announced so far that has selected push rod suspension for both front and rear.

Alfa Romeo F1 will carry out a shakedown of “C42” on February 15th (Tuesday) without prior notice. Valtteri Bottas ran a camouflaged machine on the rainy Fiorano circuit.

Alfa Romeo F1’s 2022 F1 machine “C42”, although disguised as camouflage paint, presents some interesting elements.

The front wing continues to focus on outwash, just like the model last year. In addition to the wave profile, it has three elements with a more complex design than you’ve ever seen. The nose is connected to three elements, the central profile is even lower on the spoon, accumulating aerodynamic loads.

The elements of the front wing descend at a specific distance and join from the end plate, moving the airflow to the outboard. This is a more extreme solution than the ones Aston Martin and McLaren have shown.

The front suspension has a classic push rod pattern with arms that are significantly offset from the horizontal plane.

Looking to the side, the side pods are shaped to descend towards the rear, similar to a show car, compared to what was seen in Mercedes. It can be seen that the cooling device is mounted as low as possible so that the airflow flows efficiently towards the rear wing.

The airbox is a split type that was used in the 2018 “C37”. This choice is less problematic in terms of resistance. This solution is less efficient than the traditional triangular one, but is optimized by making the machine side more open.

The Alfa Romeo C42 is equipped with Ferrari’s 2022 power unit “066”, but as far as the leaked “F1-75” image confirms, Ferrari F1 does not adopt the same design.

The louvers are engraved on the bodywork, but it should be kept in mind that design changes in this area are not prohibited.

At the bottom of the side pod is a prominent flow conveyor. This has the role of indoctrination of the airflow above the rear suspension arm and protecting the turbulence under the floor.

The most interesting thing is that it uses a push rod for the rear suspension. McLaren also uses a push rod at the rear, but the front is a pull rod, and so far only the C42 has adopted both front and rear. Other teams have selected front / push rods and rear / pull rods.

Alfa Romeo F1 has chosen to design its own outer gearbox. The engine and gearbox gears are supplied by Ferrari F1, but the casing is designed and manufactured by the team.
