Fernando Alonso explained that the “finger swing gesture” to Yuki Tsunoda at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix was a complaint about being pushed into the grass when trying to overtake.
Fernando Alonso competed with Yuki Tsunoda for a position in the second half of the race and was pulled out straight until Turn 4, but Yuki Tsunoda pulled his car toward Alonso and was pushed halfway to the grass.
Fernando Alonso, apparently frustrated by Yuki Tsunoda’s defense, lifted his right hand slightly off the steering wheel and waved to Yuki Tsunoda before completing the overtake on the inside of Turn 4.
“I was on the grass. I don’t know why he pushed me that far,” Fernando Alonso told the media about Yuki Tsunoda’s actions.
“I used DRS on the grass and it was fully open. There was no way to defend it. It was already side-by-side and I don’t know what it means.”
“It’s like that. You should avoid it at 300km / h, but it was okay.”
After overtaking Yuki Tsunoda, Fernando Alonso, who was unable to start the sprint due to an electrical failure, finished in 10th place.
Fernando Alonso’s teammate Esteban Ocon also finished in 5th place, the best of the season. Alonso said he was happy with the pace the Alpine F1 Team showed at the Red Bull Ring.
“It was a tricky race early on,” said Fernando Alonso.
“It was very difficult to overtake because we were all in the DRS train.”
“But it felt a lot faster than the cars around me and I’m very happy and optimistic about the performance of today’s cars.”
“The car we usually fight was really slow compared to our pace, which is a very good sign.”
