At the Summer Olympics in 2021, Eya Guezguez was the youngest Olympian along with her twin sister Sarra. At the age of 16, the Tunisian duo competed in FX sailing. In the end it was enough for 21st place. Now there was a fatal accident in training, in which Eya died.
The young sailor from Tunisia trained with her twin sister and the national team on Sunday. Strong winds capsized the boat. The 17-year-old was trapped under the ship, might not free herself and drowned. Her sister Sarra survived the accident in the Mediterranean Sea off the Tunisian coast.
The sisters’ plan was to compete once more at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Journalist Souhail Khmira reported the shocking incident on Twitter. Friends and fans on social media are now saying goodbye to Eya Guezguez. One user wrote: “What terrible news. Rest in peace, dear friend. You will always be with us.”
