The Riau Islands Provincial Government is stepping up efforts to protect tourists and locals from the severe weather conditions expected during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations. With heavy rainfall and extreme weather patterns forecasted, authorities are prioritizing public awareness and safety measures to minimize risks.
Adi Prihantara, the Regional Secretary of Riau Islands Province, emphasized the importance of disseminating weather updates to both tourists and fishermen. “this (dissemination of extreme weather) is importent, especially for tourists and fishers,” he stated during a meeting with Endarwin, Director of Weather Modification operations at the Riau Islands Meteorology Agency (BMKG), on January 14, 2025.
Adi highlighted the need for vigilance, noting that the region has experienced a significant increase in rainfall over the past few days. “This dissemination is critically important considering the increasing rainfall that has hit the Riau Islands in the last few days. So that we are all more vigilant,” he added. To ensure widespread awareness, the Riau Islands Tourism Office and Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) have been tasked with coordinating efforts to share weather information with sub-district heads and tourism village managers.
Extreme Weather to Persist Until April
Endarwin, the BMKG director, warned that extreme weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong waves, are expected to continue until March or April 2025. He attributed these conditions to climatic phenomena such as the weak La Nina,Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO),and cold surges. “Phenomena such as the weak La Nina, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and cold surge also affect the high rainfall and waves in the Riau Islands waters. This condition can perhaps cause disasters such as flooding and landslides if not properly mitigated,” he explained.
To address these challenges, the BMKG is leveraging its Digital weather for Traffic (DWT) feature, which provides real-time weather updates for travel routes, airports, ports, and intersections. “This early warning is designed to help tourists and the public organize their travel time and adapt to weather conditions. This step is also expected to provide comfort and safety to the public and tourists during the Chinese New Year holiday season while minimizing the impact of extreme weather in Riau Islands,” Endarwin said.
As January 11, 2025, the Riau islands have been grappling with severe weather, resulting in widespread flooding and landslides. Tragically, landslides in Batam City have claimed the lives of at least four residents, while thousands of families in bintan Regency have been displaced by floodwaters.
As the region braces for more extreme weather, the provincial government and BMKG are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike. By providing timely updates and implementing proactive measures, they aim to mitigate the impact of these adverse conditions and safeguard the well-being of all.
