The DWD warns of a “full-blown storm situation”. Snow and extreme freezing rain are forecast. The storm schedule is tough.

Munich – It is a highly explosive weather situation. A striking air mass boundary is forming over central Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) is already warning in advance regarding freezing rain and heavy snowfalls. The extreme storm situation will continue until Thursday (January 18th). The red alert is already in effect on Wednesday night.

Red alert! Highest weather warning level in Germany – “It will be an extremely difficult day”

“Major black ice chaos is possible,” predicts meteorologist Dominik Jung von wetter.net. “In many parts of the country nothing will work anymore.” That sounds dramatic. Especially since tragic black ice accidents occurred on Tuesday.

Now the chaotic weather situation is getting worse on Wednesday (January 17th). The warm front of the new Atlantic low Gertrud will move in from the southwest on Wednesday (January 17th) with heavy rainfall. According to the weather expert, freezing rain can last for hours at the air mass limit. Up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow is possible on the north side of the border.

“It will be an extremely difficult day. An extreme freezing rain situation is threatening,” fears meteorologist Lars Dahlstrom in a video from wetterkanal.kachelmannwetter.com. Branches and overhead lines might break under the ice sheets.

Those particularly affected by the storm from Wednesday (January 17th) are:

    • North Rhine-Westphalia – DWD severe weather warning levels 1 and 2 apply in many places; in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia, heavy snowfall and slippery conditions are expected from this morning, and in the east around midday, reports are being made wa.de.
    • Saarland
    • Rhineland-Palatinate
    • Hesse
    • Thuringia
    • Saxony
    • Bayern – with massive consequences. There are school cancellations in many places in Bavaria. Munich Airport is restricting operations. The Munich S-Bahn warns of failures. Deutsche Bahn is expecting the worst for long-distance and regional transport in Bavaria.
    • Baden-Württemberg

Storm schedule for Germany from Wednesday (January 17th) – Highest warning level for black ice and snow

Where exactly the limit of the air mass actually lies over Germany on Wednesday and Thursday is still uncertain in detail. According to the current status, the storm schedule is already set:

On Wednesday night (January 17): Massive risk of black ice in the southwest. The DWD warns of freezing rain in southern Baden-Württemberg and Swabia.

On the cold north side of the air mass boundary, snow falls in a Saarbrücken-Mannheim-Nuremberg line. Up to 5 centimeters of fresh snow is possible by Wednesday followingnoon. North of the Main, persistent and sometimes heavy snowfall.

Wednesday morning 7 a.m: According to weather expert Jung, snowfalls are coming in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate and the south of Hesse. In addition, the warm front brings mild air in the southwest. According to weather expert Lars Dahlstrom, this sometimes leads to a “long period of freezing rain”.

Wednesday lunchtime 12 p.m: Heavy snowfall in North Rhine-Westphalia, northern Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, northern Bavaria.

Wednesday followingnoon: According to meteorologist Jung, the air mass limit is moving across the Main. “Hours of freezing rain” threatens. Heavy snowfall is still expected in the north.

According to the DWD, “extreme storms!” due to persistent and heavy freezing rain are possible in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland as far as southern Hesse and northeastern Bavaria.

Wednesday evening: Cold air masses are causing the snow line to drop once more towards the south. The thaw in the Black Forest (13 degrees) is over. Then according to him it snows Q.met-Boss Dominik Jung strong in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and even Saxony. Snow is possible in the south of Brandenburg and partly in Berlin. However, further south it remains mild. Heavy freezing rain is possible here at times.

Weather expert warns of “chaotic conditions on the roads”

Thursday (January 18th): The DWD expects continued snowfall from Baden-Württemberg to Bavaria with significant amounts of fresh snow.

Up to 20 centimeters of new snow will fall in the Eifel, Westerwald and Taunus will see 20 centimeters of snow by Thursday. “However, very wet, very heavy snow,” he said Kachelmann weather channel-Expert Lars Dahlstrom. He fears the onset of winter and “chaotic conditions on the roads”. The expert should be right. People were stuck in kilometer-long traffic jams in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Overall, the weather forecast for Friday looks brighter once more. There is still some snow in places, especially in the north. The winter interlude lasts until Sunday (January 21st). “Germany will thaw once more on Monday and Tuesday,” promises meteorologist Dominik Jung. That gives hope, but there is obviously a threat of new trouble. There are signs of a severe storm at the start of the week. (ml)
