The DWD warns of a “full-blown storm situation”. Snow and extreme freezing rain are forecast. The storm schedule is tough.
Munich – It is a highly explosive weather situation. A striking air mass boundary is forming over central Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) is already warning in advance regarding freezing rain and heavy snowfalls. The extreme storm situation will continue until Thursday (January 18th). The red alert is already in effect on Wednesday night.

Red alert! Highest weather warning level in Germany – “It will be an extremely difficult day”
“Major black ice chaos is possible,” predicts meteorologist Dominik Jung von wetter.net. “In many parts of the country nothing will work anymore.” That sounds dramatic. Especially since tragic black ice accidents occurred on Tuesday.
Now the chaotic weather situation is getting worse on Wednesday (January 17th). The warm front of the new Atlantic low Gertrud will move in from the southwest on Wednesday (January 17th) with heavy rainfall. According to the weather expert, freezing rain can last for hours at the air mass limit. Up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow is possible on the north side of the border.

Where exactly the limit of the air mass actually lies over Germany on Wednesday and Thursday is still uncertain in detail. According to the current status, the storm schedule is already set:
On Wednesday night (January 17): Massive risk of black ice in the southwest. The DWD warns of freezing rain in southern Baden-Württemberg and Swabia.
On the cold north side of the air mass boundary, snow falls in a Saarbrücken-Mannheim-Nuremberg line. Up to 5 centimeters of fresh snow is possible by Wednesday followingnoon. North of the Main, persistent and sometimes heavy snowfall.
Wednesday morning 7 a.m: According to weather expert Jung, snowfalls are coming in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate and the south of Hesse. According to the DWD, “extreme storms!” due to persistent and heavy freezing rain are possible in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland as far as southern Hesse and northeastern Bavaria.
Wednesday evening: Cold air masses are causing the snow line to drop once more towards the south. The thaw in the Black Forest (13 degrees) is over. Weather expert warns of “chaotic conditions on the roads”
Thursday (January 18th): The DWD expects continued snowfall from Baden-Württemberg to Bavaria with significant amounts of fresh snow.
Up to 20 centimeters of new snow will fall in the Eifel, Westerwald and Taunus will see 20 centimeters of snow by Thursday. “However, very wet, very heavy snow,” he said Kachelmann weather channel-Expert Lars Dahlstrom.
