In the USA everything is bigger, as we all know. The portions in the restaurant, the fish in rivers and lakes – and also the pranks of the students? As with us, it is customary for Americans for seniors to put up a fancy “memorial” to say goodbye to their school. Most of the time it’s harmless—upturned chairs, posters on the walls—but sometimes you hear stories that aren’t funny at all. This is what happened in Florida: high school students hung a dead shark in the school roof for a prank.
Dead shark on the ceiling: students were shocked by the prank
The scene of the tasteless “prank” is the Ponte Vedra High School in the northeast of the state. Neither teacher nor student could have foreseen what was waiting in the school’s entrance hall when they opened the door. What usually causes enthusiasm, at least among students (after all, the pranks are usually aimed at the teachers), this time generated nothing but disgust. “I was on my way to first class and there was this massive shark hanging from the ceiling,” said one student. “He smelled really bad. I was completely shocked.”

Camera footage quickly revealed that it was a senior class prank; comparable to a Abistreich in Germany. Even if students like to overdo it, they rarely have to reckon with a punishment – after all, the prank is part of it. In this case, those responsible for the tasteless act should be held accountable.
The school is located south of Jacksonville, right next to the Atlantic Ocean. However, how exactly the students got hold of the shark is not clear. It is also not known how the dead shark got to the ceiling.

Animal rights activists started a petition
Shortly after the case became public, animal rights group One Protest launched a petition. The aim is to prosecute the responsible students. The organization called the prank “particularly egregious,” even compared to other cases of animal violence. The students showed no respect for life. They would enjoy killing, mutilating and displaying an animal. The petition has already gathered several thousand supporters.
