A so-called heat dome will cause extreme temperatures in several US states in the coming days. In Los Angeles, for example, it should be more than 40 degrees hot. Some authorities warn once morest outdoor activities.
More than 50 million people in the southern United States are facing a heat wave with extremely high temperatures in the coming days – from California in the southwest to Texas and Florida in the southeast. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a so-called heat dome has formed over the southwestern states, which is why the thermometer will rise to over 37 degrees Celsius in parts of California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.
The weather service warned of extreme heat for southern and central California. During the week, temperatures might soar to as high as 44 degrees in parts of Los Angeles County.
“Cancel outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.,” advised the weather service in the desert metropolis of Las Vegas, recalling that “heat is the deadliest weather phenomenon” in the United States. This extreme heat with “little or no disruption at night” will affect anyone “who does not have effective air conditioning and/or adequate water supply,” the weather service warned.
Apart from the high temperatures, it is above all the duration of the heat wave that worries the experts: In Phoenix, the capital of the state of Arizona, it has been over 43 degrees for ten days.
Texas has also been feeling the effects of the heat dome for a long time. In this weather phenomenon, the heat is trapped under a huge dome and cannot escape. The Texan city of El Paso on the border with Mexico set a new record with 24 days in a row with more than 37.7 degrees Celsius, the local weather services announced on Sunday. A heat warning is also in effect in the Miami area in southern Florida until Wednesday.
