Extreme Heat Warning and Storm Surge Alert: Hurricane Lee’s Impact on Puerto Rico

Excessive heat with indices of 112 degrees Fahrenheit or more and dangerous storm surges caused by Hurricane Lee north of the Caribbean region will affect Puerto Rico this Wednesday, according to forecasts.

The National Weather Service in San Juan issued two heat bulletins, an excessive heat warning and a heat warning, which will be in effect from 10:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the followingnoon.

He excessive heat warning will be in effect for Bayamon, Carolina, Cataño, Guaynabo, San Juan, High Toa, Low Toa, High Trujillo, Arecibo, Barceloneta, Dorado, Florida, Manatee, High Vega, Low Vega, Aguada, Añasco, Anthills, Mayagüez, Moca, Corner and St. Germain.

While the heat warning will be in effect for Arroyo, Guayama, Maunabo, Patillas, Salinas, Yabucoa, Aguas Buenas, Caguas, Cayey, Cidra, Comerío, Gurabo, Juncos, Las Piedras, San Lorenzo, Guayanilla, Juana Díaz, Yauco, Peñuelas, Ponce, Santa Isabel , Aguadilla, Camuy, Hatillo, Isabela, Quebradillas, Cabo Rojo, Guánica, Lajas, Culebra and Vieques.

In Atlantic waters, regarding 480 miles north of Quebradillas, the center of Hurricane Lee was located this morning. Although it is far from Puerto Rico, its wide circulation influences the flow of wind from the south, which promotes warm weather.

Lee will also continue to indirectly impact the Caribbean region with storm surges that will keep the sea “rough and dangerous” in the Atlantic, Meteorology added.

At 5:00 this morning, the Category 3 hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 115 miles per hour and was moving northwest at six miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported.

A tropical storm warning was issued for Bermuda ahead of Lee’s close passage through this British territory.

In the central tropical Atlantic, a tropical wave continues to strengthen that would follow a path similar to that of Hurricane Lee, according to meteorological models.

The disturbance, which has 80% potential for cyclonic development in the next seven days, would become a tropical depression over the weekend.
