Extreme Heat Red Alert in Buenos Aires: Forecast and Safety Recommendations

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) announced the weather forecast for the city of Buenos Aires and the Buenos Aires suburbs, which presents with partially cloudy skies, northeast winds rotating to the east and a temperature between 22 degrees minimum and 30 maximum .

The meteorological organization maintained a “red alert” that includes “exceptional meteorological phenomena with the potential to cause emergencies”, for this Sunday, January 28, due to the extreme high temperatures for different locations in La Pampa, Río Negro, Neuquén, Mendoza and Buenos Aires .

The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires will be affected by the last update due to extreme heat indicated by the SMN. The alert has been in effect since 06:02 this Sunday and will probably continue throughout the week, although we will have to pay attention to the forecast to confirm it. As indicated, the level of temperatures expected “can affect all people, even healthy ones.”

Rain is not expected for any day this week. With extreme thermal marks, the SMN recommends good hydration, especially for older adults and children, and not exposing themselves to the sun between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., in what will be days to extend recreation in cool places and in swimming pools until late. .

Recommendations of the Ministry of Health

  • Increase water consumption without waiting to be thirsty to maintain adequate hydration.

  • Avoid “caffeinated, alcoholic or very sugary drinks”.
  • Avoid very large meals, eat vegetables and fruits
  • Reduce physical activity
  • Wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, a hat, and dark glasses.
  • Stay in ventilated, air-conditioned spaces
  • Remember that “there are no pharmacological treatments against heat stroke and only classic methods can prevent and counteract it.”

Red alert for extreme heat

The areas affected by the red alert reach cities in the western Pampas in Chical có and Puelen; east of Neuquén, in Confluencia, east of Añelo, Pehuenches and Picú Leufú; north of Río Negro, in the east of El Cuy and General Roca.

The same warning for high temperatures remains in force in the south of Buenos Aires, on the coastal strip, which includes the territory of Bahía Blanca, Villarino and Monte Hermoso, where the temperature is expected to reach 37 degrees. The warning includes Coronel Dorrego or Costa de Patagones.

In La Pampa, in Puelén a maximum of 35 degrees is contemplated and in Picún Leufú (Neuquén), 37 degrees. Furthermore, in Puerto Madryn (Chubut) 26.8 degrees are expected and San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, 26.2 degrees.

Regarding the worrying temperatures that hit the south of the country, the thermals will continue to be high for the southern towns. In Río Negro, for San Antonio Oeste and Viedma, 29.5 and 29.8 degrees are expected. For the moment, it was reported that the SMN’s high temperature ranking decreased compared to those published yesterday.

In Mendoza it affects almost the entire province, with the exception of the capital city and the northwest, in towns such as the east of Las Heras, La Paz, Lavalle, San Martín and Santa Rosa, which is under orange alert.

In San Luis it applies to the central-west and in La Pampa it affects the west. Regarding Neuquén, the north and east are under the red alert, while in Río Negro it extends from the center and north to the east.
