The Slovenian geological survey has issued a warning regarding this, the STA news agency reported on Sunday. The population is invited to show great vigilance as to the possible evolution of soils and buildings.

Some 500 residents of villages in eastern Slovenia were evacuated on Saturday evening following the bursting of a dam under the effect of heavy rains. Residents around Koroska Bela and the Meza River on the border with Austria have also been moved to safety for fear of landslides. In the Austrian region of Carinthia, around 40 houses were evacuated as a precaution.

The level of the Mur, a river which originates in Austria, was still high on Sunday but remained stable. The Sava level in Slovenia, on the other hand, is falling.

Slovenian firefighters and civil protection had to intervene 230 times in the night from Saturday to Sunday in 186 places. These included evacuating people, pumping out water, removing uprooted trees or delivering emergency food or medicine.

“We decided to return earlier than expected”

Unfortunately for them, Belgians have decided to go to Slovenia for these summer holidays 2023, if we can call them that… This is particularly the case for Gabrielle, from Zemst, who had to endure the storm with her husband and their three children.

With HLN, the mother of the family explains that their campsite in the south-east of the country was evacuated on Friday evening and that they were then left to fend for themselves during the night. A situation that forced them to cut short their vacation.

“We and our children waited all night in our car for further instructions, but none came. Nobody knew how long we had to wait in our car, we were left to our own devices, ”says the mother regarding Friday evening. The next day, the same story: “Our campsite was surrounded by the Sava River and every hour we saw more and more flooding, so we decided to return home earlier than planned”.

If the campsite staff thought that the Belgians might continue their holidays there, Gabrielle, her husband and their three children are happy to have returned home. “All the roads were clear, so the return trip wasn’t too difficult. We are happy to be home”.
