Extreme Cold and Fog Causes Chaos in Delhi: Flight Delays, Accidents, and Fatalities

Extreme cold continues in the national capital Delhi. Due to heavy fog, the visibility is reduced. On Monday, Delhi’s Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 3.3 degrees Celsius. and 3.1 degrees Celsius at Lodhi Road. The life of ordinary people is chaotic. Car accidents are reported in many places due to snowfall.

Many flights from Delhi have been canceled due to inclement weather. More than 168 flights were delayed by an hour. Train timings are also out of order.

Flight services from Nedumbassery to Delhi were also delayed due to fog. As many as 44 flights scheduled to depart Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on Sunday morning were delayed.

Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and isolated places of Uttar Pradesh are experiencing severe cold, the Meteorological Department said.

The north-western regions of the country are unlikely to get colder till January 16. According to data provided by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 365 at 9 am.

Coal to escape the cold, and finally to death

To escape from extreme cold, coal is burnt and many people succumb to death by inhaling the smoke from it. 5 members of a family died after inhaling smoke from burning coal in Uttar Pradesh. Four people, including two children, died in a similar manner in Delhi’s Alipur. Many people are reaching the hospital due to smoke inhalation and suffocation.

The Delhi government has warned people to be careful while burning coal for cooling. It is recommended to extinguish the burnt coal before going to sleep.
