The Backyard Ultra is an ultra-trail race with a 6.7-kilometer course that must be completed in one hour. Participants who fail to complete the course in that time will be disqualified. “The characteristic of this race is that, if you finish before the hour, you can rest the remaining time until the next round,” explained Patricia Ascarza, the event organizer and athlete, in a recent interview during the Paraguay Deportivo program.

She also stressed the importance of maintaining constant discipline in training, strengthening muscles and tendons to withstand the effort.
This competition, which has been held worldwide since 2011, is coming to Paraguay for the first time. The race will take place on trails with an altitude of 120 metres, which adds an extra level of difficulty. “The terrain is different from other editions that have been held on asphalt, such as in Spain,” said the athlete.
Each runner will have a box where they can receive assistance from their team, which may include a nutritionist, physiotherapist or family member. During breaks, they will be able to change clothes, recharge their energy and prepare for the next round. “During the race we will offer hot soups and pasta to help runners stay in optimal condition during the long hours of competition,” Patricia explained.
Registrations and categories
The competition has three categories: four laps for beginners, eight laps for more advanced runners, and the endless category, where only one person will be left standing. “Those interested in participating can register through our social networks, but they must be physically prepared for this challenge,” Patricia warned.
For this first edition, approximately 100 runners are expected to participate. “It is a new edition and people are finding out what it is regarding through social networks,” said Patricia. Expectations are high and the competition is expected to last more than 24 hours, testing the physical and mental limits of the athletes.
The Backyard Ultra is not only a physical test, but also a mental one. Runners will have to find the perfect pace to complete each lap within the time limit, without wearing themselves out too much. “It is essential to maintain resilience over time and continuous discipline in training,” concluded Patricia.
