It’s not every day that a stranger gives you flowers. And what flowers! With his navy captain’s cap with a red pompom, his Hawaiian shirt and his white goatee, the Morgien Bernard Tardy, 77, landed at the editorial office of “24 hours” Wednesday morning on the air of the tralala: “Look!”
At the end of his outstretched arm towards us, a pretty bouquet of fuchsia pink tulips. A bouquet? “This is not a bouquet, ma’am. Only two stems, but sixteen flowers in total, you can count,” he exults.

Eyes wide, we checked: nine tulips on one stem, seven on the other. He is convinced of it, it is unheard of. in full tulip festival, the former landscaper went to peek in all the massifs of Morges and, “name of a pipe!” he has seen nothing like it. Hence his triumphant arrival in Lausanne: “Tulips like that, you won’t find them anywhere, it’s very recent! I want everyone to benefit from it.”

And there he is, taking another trophy out of his big bag, a neatly framed undated press clipping. A slightly yellowed article, published in “24 hours” under the title “An extraordinary harvest”. It’s because Bernard Tardy, known as “the Captain”, loves nature, its curiosities and its jokes. A subscriber to strokes of luck, he has just taken a 56-kilo pike out of Lake Geneva with his group of friends: “We fish together every Thursday, a fantastic agreement!” The man also dreams of appearing in the Guinness Book of Records.
Do his astonishing tulips, which magically appeared in one of the tubs on his terrace, have a chance? Not according to Stanley Mathey, head of the Parks and Walks Department of the City of Morges. These multifloral varieties, which are difficult to find commercially, are a niche market, but they have been around for several years, assures the specialist: “Nine tulips on a single stem is a lot, but I have already seen more. »
There is, however, something extraordinary in this little story. The wonder is Monsieur Tardy.
