The researchers used new equipment such as radar, used in underground object detection, to examine the area beneath Giza’s Western Cemetery to see if there were any undiscovered buried objects.
They have discovered two underground structures, one shallower and the other deeper, under a royal cemetery near the 45-hundred-year-old Great Pyramid.
Archaeologists describe these structures as a different discovery because their density is different from the surrounding land.
They believe these structures are man-made due to their shape and suspect they were backfilled following construction.
“The Western Cemetery at Giza is known as an important burial site for members of the royal family and high-ranking officials,” archaeologists wrote.
He added that preliminary surveys using radar and electrical resistivity tomography, used in the discovery of underground objects, revealed ‘a different structure to the north of the survey site’.
‘The area of this different structure might be roughly determined, but its structure and location were not clear.’
The shallow structure is 10 meters wide and 15 meters long and less than two meters deep.

Researchers suspect that it was built to aid in the construction of a large and deep structure that is regarding five meters at its deepest point and 10 meters deep.
The researchers say that such an unusual structure might be caused either by a mixture of sand and gravel or by ‘passage of air between closely spaced spaces’.
“It may be the entrance to a deeper structure,” he said.
‘We believe that the continuity of shallow structures and large deep structures is important. From the results of the survey, we cannot determine the material that made up this unusual structure, but it might be a large underground archaeological structure.’
They hope that careful excavation of the site can help determine the nature of these structures.
