The Heads of State and Government of UEMOA lifted the sanctions against Niger to relieve the populations. This is at the end of the extraordinary session held on February 24, 2024 in Abuja (Nigeria).

After ECOWAS, the sanctions against Niger were re-examined by UEMOA. The sanctions taken on July 30, 2023 have been lifted with immediate effect. This concerns the closure of land and air borders between Niger and UEMOA countries; the ban on flying over UEMOA airspace for any commercial aircraft heading to or from Niger; the suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between WAEMU countries and Niger, including those relating to goods and services and electricity. The sanctions relating to the freezing of Niger’s assets at the BCEAO are also lifted; the freezing of assets of the State of Niger as well as the country’s public and parapublic companies housed in the commercial banks of UEMOA member states; the suspension of financial operations between banks in Niger and banks established in other WAEMU countries; the suspension of all assistance and financial transactions in favor of Niger by UEMOA financing institutions, particularly BOAD. Added to this are the sanctions prohibiting travel for government representatives and members of their families and the ban on stay in the UEMOA area for government representatives and members of their families.
