The members of the extortion ring hid the hundreds of thousands of euros they collected from their activity in magazines, newspapers, tapers and napkins.
43-year-old “Nancy”, the alleged ringleader and her brother who transported the black money to their mother’s house are said to be at the top of the leadership of the ring that had recruited civil servants and municipal police officers, who proceeded to blackmail professionals and received large sums of money.
The life of the alleged leader, who apologized yesterday Thursday 11/7, was luxurious. Among other things, dozens of very expensive watches were found in her possession.
In particular, yesterday five of the total six defendants were remanded in custody, who were called to give explanations to the corruption investigator as members of the extortion ring that operated in Athens and other areas, selling protection to shops and hotels for a pittance.
The marathon process started early in the morning and ended with Nancy’s apology. The woman remained in the investigator’s office for less than half an hour, with reports saying she flatly denied leading the organization, as she is accused.
The woman allegedly claimed to have a processing role, which was limited to simple “arrangements” to help shopkeepers avoid fines and penalties for any violations. In fact, to strengthen her claims, she allegedly noted that none of the businessmen whom the case file accuses her of extorting have turned once morest her.
“A total of 7 of the 14 arrested made their way to the detention centers following the completion of the investigative process. The investigation of the Authorities has not been completed, as two notes with transactions reaching back to 2015 have been identified, while the authorities estimate that now that the case has arrived, it has taken the path of justice, possibly they will open their mouths and testify similar incidents”, said the police editor of ERT, Costas Papadopoulos.
