The White House announced the extension for 18 more months of the Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans in the US and extended the deadline for entry into the country for those who can now apply until July 31.

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Wednesday the decision to expand and extend protection against deportation for thousands of Venezuelan citizens in the country for a period of 18 months.

“Given the extraordinary and temporary conditions that prevent certain Venezuelan citizens currently in the United States from safely returning to Venezuela, the Secretary of Homeland Security is extending and redesignating Venezuela to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months for people who resided in the United States as of July 31, 2023,” DHS reported in a statement.

TPS allows immigrants without permanent status to stay in the US and obtain a work permit, while protecting them from immediate deportation.

The measure to grant TPS to Venezuelans who will be in the country until July 31, 2023 makes it easier and faster for them to obtain these work permits, one of the key demands of Democratic mayors and governors who are struggling to serve an increasing number of migrants under his care.
