Ali points to the nearby hill. “It’s not this one, it’s the one from beforehe explains. This is where we lived until the start of the war.” Ali is a Bedouin from the Zawahra clan. Until October 15, he lived in Ein ar-Rashash, a small village nestled among the arid hills of the central West Bank. That morning, eight days following the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, he, his family and his entire community were forced to pack up and leave their land, under pressure from neighboring settlers. Ninety Bedouins and their 400 animals dispersed in the surrounding hills overlooking the Jordan Valley.

Under a large tent, sitting on the Bedouin carpets that cover the ground, Ali serves coffee, surrounded by his brothers and his father. Since October 15, the family has settled on this piece of land lent by a farmer from Douma, the neighboring village. “The colonists profited from the war to chase us awayhe said. They had been harassing us for months. The war left them free», he sighs. The Malachei Hashalom colony (“Angels of Peace”, in Hebrew), was established on the heights which dominate the village in 2015. Initially an illegal outpost made up of a single family and its sheep, the facility was legalized in 2023 and has expanded. It now has around thirty occupants.
