Ferid Belhaj: “The WB will expand the financing space…”

“The annual meetings, which will be held from October 11 to 16 in Marrakech, will be an opportunity to demonstrate that the World Bank will expand the financing space and give new impetus to relations with the countries of the South,” it is this was recently declared by Férid Belhaj, vice-president of the World Bank for the Mena region, on a private radio station. According to him, there is no comparison between Brics Bank or other new banks and the World Bank. It is necessary to have solidarity between these banks and the World Bank, given the importance of the economic and social challenges facing the world. “The role of the state in the economies of the countries of the Mena region is heavy and rather negative, because the private sector does not have all the capacities it should have. The WB is trying to look for mechanisms to finance this approach so that the private sector has more strength and impact in the different countries of the region,” assures Belhaj in another register. Regarding the energy transition aspect, the official explains that granting the private sector the capacity to produce alternative energy would give a strong boost to the energy transition in countries like Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt…

GIFruits : Fruit export falling

Between January 1 and September 4, 2023, Tunisia exported 26,396 tons of fruit. This is a drop of 44.7% compared to the same period a year earlier. In value terms, these exports fell by nearly 15% during the same period, according to data recently published by the Interprofessional Fruit Group. The Libyan market, which alone accounts for around 73.5% of Tunisian fruit exports, imported, during the current season, 8,022 tonnes of peach, 3,461 tonnes of plum and 3,423 tonnes of apricot. Tunisia’s second customer is Italy, which imported 4,817 tonnes of fruit, including 4,314 tonnes of watermelon.
