The alternative medicine center Ozono Cuba-Perú, located in the urbanization El Recreo, Trujillo, La Libertad, was the target of a dynamite attack last Thursday evening, around 8:25 p.m. Those responsible for the detonation, tentatively identified as four criminals, left no casualties or injuries as the premises remained closed at the time of the incident. The authorities assume that this action may be related to an extortion attempt.
The explosion affected the infrastructure of the establishment, destroying the metal door and causing several glasses to shatter due to the shock wave generated. A witness present in the area described how metal remains were scattered following the explosion. It should be noted that the incident took place in front of the national police town and a short distance from a local police station.
Immediately, the personnel of the Criminal Investigation Division (Divincri) in Trujillo went to the site for the relevant investigations. Members of Citizen Security and the Explosives Deactivation Unit (Udex) joined the operation. This fact occurs in a context in which Trujillo has been declared emergency situation due to persistent problems of citizen insecurity.

In 2023, Peru faced an alarming 44% increase in extortion cases, with a total of 22,302 incidents across the country. This phenomenon has escalated into a serious security problem affecting various regions, as revealed by the Police Complaint System (Sidpol). The departments of Amazonas and Ayacucho present the highest rates of increase, with increases of 220% and 200% respectively. Specifically, Amazonas saw a jump from 103 to 330 cases, while Ayacucho went from 117 to 351 reported cases. Although Lima, Piura, La Libertad and Callao do not show increases that exceed the national average, they together account for a significant number of cases, totaling 14,870 incidents. Other departments such as Cajamarca, Moquegua, Apurímac, Junín, Puno, Huancavelica, Loreto and Cusco also reported a growth of more than 100% in complaints, indicating an expansion of the problem in the national territory.
As a response to the increase in crime, the government decided to extend the state of emergency in the province of Trujillo for a period of 60 days, and this extension began on April 14, 2024. This action seeks to intensify security and restore calm among residents, thus directly facing the challenge of crime in the area.
