Explosion this morning in the Marolles district: “there was a very strong smell of burnt steel” (PHOTOS AND VIDEO)

An explosion sounded Monday morning around 8:30 a.m., followed by a fire, in a house located in the Marolles district of Brussels, rue Saint-Ghislain, according to the Brussels firefighters. The latter intervened with three pumpers, two self-ladders, two Smurs and four ambulances. Two people were injured and the building is uninhabitable, unlike the neighboring houses, where some windows have to be replaced. “The final report shows two wounded, who were evacuated to hospital, and two people in shock., said Monday around 10:00 a.m., the spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade, Walter Derieuw. Among the injured, a person with third degree burns on the upper part of his body. In addition, a resident was saved by firefighters via the self-ladder.

“The damaged house is uninhabitable. The city of Brussels will relocate the inhabitants”said Walter Derieuw.

It was a gas explosion, according to firefighters, but the exact causes have yet to be determined.

Saïda lives the next street, “it was very impressive, already just with the sound of the explosion”she explains. “So when I opened the door it was even more impressive, there was a very strong smell of burning steel. I have a friend who lives down the street, I was very worried, I had the lump in the stomach.”
