According to witness statements, a car crashed into a border post – then there was a huge fireball.

At 11:51 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday, a car exploded on the Rainbow Bridge, which leads directly to Niagara Falls. According to an eyewitness, the vehicle flew several meters high through the air. The car was driving at high speed on the US side towards the border with Canada, eyewitness Rickie Wilson said in front of TV cameras.

Eyewitness Mike Guenther told television station WGRZ-TV that he saw a vehicle speeding toward the border crossing from the US side of the border as it tried to avoid another car. Then it hit a fence and exploded. “Suddenly it flew into the air, and then it was a fireball regarding 30 or 40 feet high,” Guenther told the station. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

According to media reports, the two occupants of the vehicle are dead. A border official was also said to have been injured in the explosion. As Fox News reports, this is said to be an attempted terrorist attack. The situation is “very uncertain,” said the FBI. The bridge was closed following the explosion.

After the explosion, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concern. “We are taking this extremely seriously,” said Trudeau on Wednesday in Ottawa. They are in close contact with the US authorities.

FBI terrorism task force investigates

The authorities do not assume an act of terrorism. At this point in time there is no evidence of a terrorist attack, said the Governor of the US state of New York, Kathy Hochul, at a press conference on Wednesday. But it will take a while until we find out what happened. Hochul confirmed that two passengers in the car were killed. A border officer was slightly injured in the incident on Wednesday followingnoon.
