A strong explosion occurred near the airport in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, local media reported, with authorities saying a fire had caused injuries.

According to witnesses cited by the Nova24 news website, the explosion took place in a customs warehouse near the airport, and videos circulated on social media showing a plume of flames and smoke rising into the night sky.

The Ministry of Health indicated that a “fire” had broken out overnight in the warehouse and that an unknown number of injured people had been taken to hospital.

“At the moment, there are no serious injuries among them. At this time, doctors are providing all necessary medical assistance,” the ministry said on Telegram.

“Emergency medical care is also being provided to people injured in the fire at the accident site and in surrounding apartments.”

Uzbekistan is the most populous of Central Asia’s former Soviet republics, and fires blamed on poorly maintained equipment and poor compliance with safety standards are common there.
