The passion for writing can lead to explore unknown topics and provide valuable information through creativity and research, an example of this is that of Lilia Arellano Barrera, a third-year student of the Surgeon Degree, who thanks to her creativity and interest in Medicine, created a story to raise awareness about a little-known disease: chromoblastomycosis.

“During the second year of the career in the field of Microbiology and Parasitology, in the Mycology block, Our teacher asked us for homework to write a story about a fungus that caught our attention, and when thinking that I would probably have to do my Medical Internship or my Social Service outside of Mexico City, I decided to write about chromoblastomycosis, a disease that represents the second most frequent mycosis in Mexico and, given the lack of information available on the subject, writing about this fungus caught my attention,” he explained.

Although the writing process was a bit difficult at firstbecause he wanted to make sure that the story was accurate and at the same time interesting, Lilia was inspired by the book Illustrated Medical Mycology by Roberto Arenas to write and investigate this fungus and, Thanks to your dedication managed to translate his learning into a story that seeks to educate and sensitize the population on the importance of preventing and treating tropical diseases. “I had already written before, but about nothing related to Medicine, and when I needed to write about this fungus my creativity kicked in so that epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of chromoblastomycosis was understandable and did not fall into something that can be found in a scientific article”, he highlighted.
