Exploring the Toyota bZ4X 2WD: A Long-Term Relationship with an Exotic Electric Car

2024-01-27 23:00:00

The Far East electric car with the exotic name, even as a front-wheel drive car, has all the ingredients for a successful long-term relationship.

The all-electric Toyota was introduced as an all-wheel-drive top model in March last year, as was its technically closely related brother, the Subaru Solterra, in late autumn.

Toyota bZ4X 2 WD: Only an electric motor and all-wheel drive are missing

The 2WD variant we are now looking at differs from the two 4×4 versions (the Subaru is generally only available with all-wheel drive) not only in its front-wheel drive. In terms of engine power, only one instead of two electric motors are used, which means 204 instead of 218 hp.

While this shortcoming is negligible in everyday life, the all-wheel drive is more likely to work – especially in the Salzburger Land, which has recently been unusually wintry. Especially on snow, ice and mud, the front tires repeatedly struggle to bring the immediately available torque of 266 Newton meters to the road.

In terms of consumption, the 2WD version is a touch more economical than the all-wheel drive, with an average of 21.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. However, the WLTP consumption of 14.4 kWh is miles away – the temperatures around freezing point during the test are not enough of an excuse.

Confident battery guarantee with the Toyota bZ4X

Apart from the slightly increased consumption, you can’t go wrong with the bZ4X: If you like the RAV4-like look, Toyota promises a battery guarantee of at least 70 percent remaining capacity following one million kilometers.

IM TEST: Toyota bZ4X 2WD

Five-seat electric SUV, three-phase synchronous motor 150 kW (204 hp), 1-speed automatic, front-wheel drive. 1970 kg, trunk 410-452 l, battery 71.4 kWh, max. charging power 150 kW (DC), 11 kW (AC), WLTP consumption 14.4 kWh, in the test: 21.2 kWh. Price from 51,290 euros, test car: 57,290 euros.

What likes: The visual exotic bonus.

What you like less: The all-wheel drive is very bad.
