Exploring the Sexual Lives of Seniors: Age is Not a Barrier to Pleasure and Satisfaction

2023-07-05 15:20:00

Seniors are far from having given up on their sex life! 65% of seniors report having sexual intercourse, and a significant proportion of them are even quite sexually active. 65% of seniors say they are satisfied with their sex life, considering that it is one of the important pleasures in life. “It’s important to remember: aging does not, in itself, lead to a decline in desire and sexuality. There is no decline because there are no standards for it. Excitement and pleasure are intimate territories that are experienced differently from one individual to another, and over time,” according to Véronique Cayado, Doctor of Psychology and research engineer for the Oui Care Institute 1 .

Seniors also have a much more uninhibited sexuality

The oldest report much less often than the youngest the existence of physical complexes that interfere with their sex life (22% reported such complexes among those aged 60 and over).

Sexuality is not a taboo subject according to 84% of French people, it is even more true for the oldest: 91% among those over 60 years old. But they display a less pronounced satisfaction and attraction to sexuality…

On average, 71% of French people surveyed say they are satisfied with their sex life. Only a minority of individuals consider that sexuality is not an important pleasure in life (28% on average). “No wonder one might think, it’s age that wants it! Except that if we reduce these observations to a question of age, we miss essential things. Because when we look closer, we note that behind age, there are other differences”, according to Véronique Cayado.

Important differences between men and women

57% of women believe that sex is not an important pleasure in life compared to 24% of men over 60. Women are much less likely to report having sex: 48% compared to 73% of men over 60.

Important differences between seniors in couple and singles

It is mainly single seniors who say they do not have sex or no longer have sex (63% compared to 24% among seniors in a couple). 49% of single seniors say they are “satisfied” with their sex life compared to 72% of seniors in a couple. “These results are very important because they introduce nuance behind the senior category. A senior, that means nothing! The study shows that the level of satisfaction drops among older people. If, on the contrary, we note that it is mainly single seniors who are rather dissatisfied, this draws other explanatory hypotheses such as the absence of a partner,” analyzes Véronique Cayado.
