Benefits of working with the streets of your city
These types of exercises offer you lots of benefits if you work them in the classroom. We tell you the most important:
- Increases knowledge of your city’s history: Through the curiosity aroused by wanting to know the anecdotes related to the streets, we increase their knowledge of history.
- We help them develop their identity: After all, they are part of and are heirs to the community. By working with their story, we help them develop a sense of belonging.
- We work through learning situations key skills such as research and analysis: Your students will have to look for information regarding the people, places or events they refer to.
How to do a social exercise from streets
Now that we have already talked regarding the advantages of carrying out an activity of this type, we will tell you how to do a social exercise from the streets. We are going to divide the content in two, referring to the two main stages of education: primary and secondary.
Primary education
In Primary Education it can be interesting conduct directed learning. Students will find it more interesting to know the history of the streets of their city if we manage to arouse their curiosity.
To do this, we can select a weekly hour to work with the name of a street, following this scheme:
- We teach our students the name of the street and a picture of it. We encourage you to share, loudly, the elements that catch your attention. We can choose a street with a statue or any other type of monument.
- Then we encourage them to try to find out where it came from the name of the street. In this way, we help them develop their imagination and arouse greater curiosity in them.
- Finally, We tell you the story behind of the street name. We invite you to make a drawing representing it, so that you internalize it and remember it better. We can make a mural with each of your drawings.
Compulsory Secondary Education
In Compulsory Secondary Education we can have a greater influence on the Autonomous work. With this activity, which we can call wandering: ddiscover your citywe are going to encourage our students to become authentic researchers.
Next, we tell you a activity scheduling model which you can follow:
- Introduction class: As teachers, we will share with our students the objectives that we pursue with the activity. We will also provide the materials and set up the groups. We will work to resolve doubts that may arise in these first moments of work.
- Field work: the students walk in groups of three or four people through the city. They write down street names that call their attention, briefly describing the place and all the historical elements that are significant to them at that time.
- Research in class: in the classroom, we will provide them with Internet devices. With them, they will have to investigate the history and meaning of the streets. We can also transfer this activity to the library, taking advantage of the computers that are usually available and teaching our students to consult bibliography.
- Exhibition: each group shares with the rest of the classmates the research they have carried out.
- Mural: We can finish the activity by creating a mural together and displaying it in the corridors of the institute, so that the rest of the classes can also see the information.
