Exploring the Professional Soccer Journey: Homesickness, Training, and Lifestyle

Homesickness not an issue

What is different from ours? “The training ground is much more professional. We have 24/7 access to courts, gym and physios. The biggest plus for me is that I don’t have to drive more than 50 kilometers there and back every day like from Weil im Schönbuch to Bruchwald,” says the ex-zero eight. One difference is that the season on the Florida peninsula only lasts from August to, ideally, the beginning of December. Spring is the off-season, which can be compared to long preparations with friendlies and tournaments.

During the season, soccer players have training except for one day a week – according to the rules, one day must be free – and there are also two or three meetings during the week, which mostly involve video analysis of them following the game and analysis of the opponent included in the respective game.

“The climate and lifestyle are significantly different. I don’t remember needing a sweater here in the Sunshine State, except to go shopping or eat out because the A/C is always set way too cold. The weather,” Toth continues, “is great. In the summer it’s almost too warm and the tropical storms can sometimes delay one or the other training session or game for hours, but you get used to it.”

The lifestyle is also very different. Everything is more expensive, especially groceries and restaurants. But you don’t have ten minutes from your house to the beach and Palm Beach. For example, he met Mike Tyson and Serena Williams nearby. “On the island you can’t afford it as a mere mortal. I just researched how much the cheapest two bedroom apartment to rent would cost per month and came up with $5000, so just over €4500 for an 80 square meter apartment. And it’s the cheapest on the market right now,” reports the footballer.

Return to FSV 08?

“Of course,” he assured me, “every Saturday I followed the results of the zero eights and the whole league. And even if the second half of the season wasn’t the very best, following such a huge upheaval you can be really proud to finish in a good ninth place.”

He cautiously answers the obvious question regarding returning to Bruchwald: “After returning, my first priority is starting a job. So far I don’t know where my career is taking me. All I know is that I don’t want to drive 100 kilometers every day. So,” he continues, “I don’t want to make any false promises here, just be honest. I can’t even say 100 percent that it will be Germany. So I just want to be flexible, but of course continue to play football and have fun with it.”

Interest from Bayern Munich

In his first year at FSV 08 Bietigheim-Bissingen, Yannick Toth received an invitation from Bayern Munich right before the first Oberliga game of the 2016/17 season. “I had obviously made a very good first impression here in the pre-season and was invited for three days, including a friendly. However, it was following the transfer window, so I should have come once more in the winter. A few weeks later, however, I tore a meniscus with further consequences, missed the promotion games in the regional league – and following coach Vogel was fired, I never heard from FCB once more.
