The mayor of Liège does not rule out the possibility of organizing an Off festival on the sidelines of Les Ardentes, a Liège festival of urban music which will take place in Rocourt from 6 to 9 July next and where some 65,000 people a day are expected. He expressed himself in this sense Monday evening, during the municipal council, in response to an interpellation of the Vert Ardent group.
“The international dimension of this event, clearly claimed by the organizers, represents a tourist opportunity that our City should better seize”, noted Eléna Chane-Alune, for Vert Ardent.
“Like the Spanish metropolises, Liège might, for example, support, or even initiate, the creation of an Off festival by allowing the organization of warm-ups during the day, in the city center, around cafes and terraces as well as the holding of post-festival evenings following the closing of the concerts at 1 a.m. in Rocourt”, she added, pointing out that “the economic impact of the festival will be much more interesting for the City if the festival-goers consume in the city center rather than staying confined to the Rocourt campsite.
The mayor of Liège, Willy Demeyer, was in favor of it, saying he was a fan of the famous festival in Avignon (France). However, he added that such a proposal must be studied on various aspects, particularly in terms of safety or mobility, knowing that the distance between the Rocourt site and the city center of Liège makes travel on foot impossible.
