A dive into the fantastic world of Tolkien (France 3)
All fans of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy rejoice! They are invited to discover this exhibition at Leclerc Fund for cultivation in Landerneau: In the footsteps of Tolkien and the medieval imagination. From the origin of the myths of the Middle Ages to the big screen, the exhibition allows us to understand how one of the ten most read books in the world has given rise to so many artistic variations, in illustration, painting, cinema, video games and series. The fantastic universe of the British novelist indeed came to life under the pencil of John Howe at the end of the 1990s. This internationally renowned Canadian artist first illustrated the works of JRR Tolkien before participating in the artistic direction of the two film trilogies The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, alongside director Peter Jackson. In a free path, the public can stroll among more than 250 drawings and paintings by John Howe. “We enter like that in a space with great immersive works and at the same time with an incredible wealth of digital works, original works. We are really the hero of the film”, explains Diane Launier, the curator of the exhibition.

Tolkien’s novels were inspired by medieval mythology
John Howe’s visuals are now world famous. Accustomed to working alone in a studio, the designer spent nearly 8 years in New Zealand alongside director Peter Jackson and his artistic teams. “It’s very exciting, it’s other parameters. We favor dialogue, we favor exchange, the desire to work as a team and it’s going very well” emphasizes John Howe. More recently, the Canadian, trained largely in France, also took part in the artistic creation of the Rings of Power. Drawings made for this new series still inspired by Tolkien are unveiled in Landerneau, in world preview. Deliberately breaking the boundaries between culture and entertainment, this exhibition shows the inspirations and references that feed the medieval imagination with authentic objects from the Middle Ages such as armor or swords, punctuated with works by Tolkien. Because let’s not forget that to create his work, Tolkien, who was a recognized linguist and specialist in medieval English and European literature, drew heavily on the mythology of that time and in particular that of the Nordic countries.
In the footsteps of Tolkien and the medieval imagination until January 28, 2024 at the Leclerc Fund, 71 Rue de la Fontaine Blanche, Rue des Capucins, 29800 Landerneau.
