Exploring the Marne-Rhine Canal: Electric Boats and Charging Stations for a Sustainable Voyage

2023-06-18 17:09:25

The Marne-Rhine canal, which connects Nancy to Strasbourg, extends over more than 300 km. It is currently used by yachtsmen, many of whom rent boats without a license, with cabins, like those encountered on the Canal du Midi. On the busiest part, VNF has decided to finance and install around ten electric charging stations, ie around twenty 22 kW sockets, like those found in towns or businesses. For these terminals to prove to be of any use, electric boats are needed. And this is where the shoe pinches since there is no specialized manufacturer. So two manufacturers, who are also rental companies, tried the experiment. Les Canalous built one boat while Nicols made two. Externally, nothing distinguishes these boats from others. The most recent of them, the Saverne, measures 13 meters and has two double cabins.

Fully equipped, it is high-end and sails at 8 km/h, like all the others on this channel. No difference in terms of driving, but in terms of pleasure. No noise, no vibration, no diesel smoke. The perfect match for this type of transport. The battery with a capacity of just over 60 kWh (like a car) allows you to navigate for 8 hours. More than enough when you know that the average boater traffic does not exceed 5 hours a day. If you want more, just plug into the terminals, as you do with any electric car.
