When his death was announced, the reactions were similar to his music: unison. Phill Niblock, who died yesterday at the age of 90, was one of the legends of contemporary music, considered at its most experimental.
His specialty: the drone – by which we mean musical layers of very long duration, superimposed on each other while respecting a clever division of portions of tones, like a manic division of our chromatic habits. This intermingling of micro-tonalities then creates harmonics, echoes – and above all builds the necessary substrate for perfectly hypnotic musical experiences.
