It highlights its role in the history of Vendée.

At the age of 14, he moved to Nantes with his mother and began working to provide for their needs, while nurturing a devouring passion for reading.

He began writing literature as a teenager and in 1944 planned to write a History of People’s Writers.

Installed in Paris in 1954, he became a second-hand bookseller and rubbed shoulders with personalities like André Malraux.

A passion for art and architecture

Alongside his activity as a writer, Ragon discovered a passion for art and architecture, becoming an avant-garde critic and becoming friends with artists like Pierre Soulages and Gaston Chaissac.

He became a recognized specialist in modern architecture and town planning, publishing reference works in these fields.

Despite his move to Paris, Ragon remains attached to his Vendée roots, as evidenced by his series of novels on the Vendée, begun in the 1980s.

His libertarian political commitment is evident throughout his work, where he highlights figures such as Proudhon and Louis Lecoin.

The exhibition From Vendée to Writing at the Hôtel du Département de la Vendée offers a chronological and thematic journey through the life and work of Ragon, highlighting his rich literary and artistic production.

Rare documents and personal objects are exhibited there, allowing visitors to better understand this unique writer.

Conferences and guided tours complete this retrospective, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the world of Michel Ragon.
