The Middle East, and with it the world, had been eagerly awaiting the speech on Friday by the Lebanese Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, who addressed his followers via video address in the afternoon for the first time since the beginning of the Gaza war. For weeks there have been fears in Israel that Nasrallah’s well-armed militia could come to Hamas’s aid from the north and in this way open up a second front. Israel’s army is therefore on “very, very high alert,” as it said on Friday.
