Why are people in the Loyalty Islands more vulnerable to gout and kidney failure? This is what scientists are trying to find out. “We wonder if these pathologies are not linked to the genes“, explains Stéphanie Fabre, rheumatologist and medical coordinator of a survey which has just been launched.
Funded by the management of community action and health action of the province of the Islands (DACAS) and an American biotechnology company, it aims to identify which gene(s) might be involved, to “better understand the path that the disease takes to arrive” et “We hope to deal with it better in the future.“
Sick or not, inhabitants of the islands or Nouméa: the survey is open to all Loyalty residents.
All Loyalists are invited to participate until mid-December. Including people who don’t have gout or kidney failure. “We need a reference group to be able to compare the results people who have the disease with the results of people who don’t.“Always with the aim of better understanding the pathology.
Kaömë Waikata made an appointment. Around him, “en this moment people are dying of gout. Especially at my age.“He has no symptoms. The main ones are severe joint pain. Often taken lightly. However, the disease increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, says Stéphanie Fabre.
The survey includes a questionnaire on medical and family history and diet, as well as a free medical check-up. It takes forty minutes. Those residing in Loyalty must make an appointment with DACAS (45 52 22). Those who live in Noumea can contact the medical office of the islands (24 18 71), located in the city center. Or the Medipole.
