Reportedly, married women in the country spend an average of seven hours a day doing housework and men less than three hours a day. This is according to data from World Bank and National Sample Survey Office. Most of the women in the country belong to this category irrespective of job, income range and caste.
It is also reported that the number of women engaged in other occupations is decreasing due to the burden of housework. In the last 20 years there has been an increase in the number of women receiving education, but the presence of women in the workplace is decreasing. In 10 years, the number of girls taking admission in class 10 has increased from 46 to 87 percent. But the presence of women in workplaces has decreased from 30 to 24 percent.
Compared to Bhutan, Brazil, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan, India has the least female presence in the workplace. China is ahead. 61 percent. The report also shows that women who do not go to other jobs spend most of their time in ‘unpaid work’.
