The studio is currently working on the next Witcher trilogy using Unreal Engine 5, and the sequel Cyberpunk 2077 will also use Epic Games’ technology. Considering the level of picture the Cyberpunk 2077 developers managed to achieve with path tracing and ray tracing reconstruction, players are wondering whether there is any point in switching to Unreal Engine 5. Digital Foundry specialists even believe that Cyberpunk 2077 is now the most beautiful and technologically advanced game on the market . Speaking to PC Gamer, game director for Phantom Liberty and the upcoming sequel, Gabriel Amatangelo, clarified that the move to Unreal Engine 5 doesn’t mean CD Projekt RED is starting from scratch. The developer noted that the decision was made taking into account the creative ideas that the studio wants to implement. This doesn’t mean we are starting from scratch. Often when you’re working on technologies like ray tracing reconstruction, there are solutions that allow you to apply it all to another engine. If you look at Unreal Engine 5 and REDengine, they have a lot in common in what they do well. Gabriel Amatangelo, game director Amatangelo also recalled that the studio is not just using Unreal Engine 5. It is working with Epic Games on tools that will be specifically adapted to the needs of its games. The game director emphasized that the team is glad to have the opportunity to take on the sequel, using the experience of working on Cyberpunk 2077, without having to rewrite its engine once once more. There are still things that REDengine does better than Unreal Engine 5, and we’re working with Epic Games to fix that. All this works both ways. We are talking regarding economics of scale. Of course, all this cool stuff is possible on both engines, but ultimately you want to be able to do more. Not necessarily even better, maybe at the same level, but more. Gabriel Amatangelo, Game Director CD Projekt RED’s first game on Unreal Engine 5 will be the next “The Witcher”. The studio plans to use the technical basis of this game for the next two parts in the trilogy. As for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, its full development will begin only in 2024, along with the opening of an office in Boston. So far the project has only the code name Orion.
