Exploring the Demographics of Seniors in Luxembourg and Wallonia: Trends, Disparities, and Exceptional Municipalities

Observed in all provinces and districts, this upward trend is not, however, observed in all municipalities in the south of the country. Indeed, some localities are exceptions to the rule.

Seniors less present in Luxembourg

Unlike Walloon Brabant, which remains the privileged French-speaking province of the over 65s, Luxembourg clearly appears to be the one where seniors are the rarest. In the very south of the country, only 17.8% of seniors were thus identified on January 1, 2023 among the population once morest 20.3% in the district of Nivelles.

Wallonia: these municipalities where the population will explode / decrease by 2035

Another observation: Thuin and its region seems to be the corner of Wallonia where the proportion of elderly people (21.2%) is the highest. This is followed by Dinant (20.4%), BW, Picardy Wallonia and the district of Marche-en-Famenne (20.2%).

And in the municipalities? Again, there are many disparities. While nearly one inhabitant of Vresse-sur-Semois (28.3%) in three is aged at least 65, the latter are much less present in the Luxembourg municipalities of Léglise (11.1%), Martelange (12.7%) and Bertogne (12.9%), where the proportion of children and adolescents is one of the highest in the Region. To believe that cohabitation between young and old is almost impossible…

Martelange, the Walloon exception of recent decades

Still, the figures prove it: the share of seniors in the Walloon population continues to climb. And the trend is not necessarily different in the majority of municipalities in the south of the country. Examples in Nandrin, where the proportion of elderly people (65 years and over) has jumped 7.3% since 2013, or in Neupré, where the authorities have increased the number of older people by around 10.3% on the entire local population.

However, although the representation of seniors has greatly increased in several entities, especially in Walloon Brabant, in 20 years, some localities are losing more seniors over the decades. In total, since 2003, 25 localities (out of 262 in Wallonia) have seen the proportion of seniors in their community fall. Starting with Léglise, but also Martelange, Hélécine and Tintigny.

Chaudfontaine, the eldorado for the over 80s

Still according to figures from the Walloon Institute for Evaluation, Forecasting and Statistics, 5% of the Walloon population was aged 80 or over on January 1, 2023.

“Baby boom” or fall in the birth rate: here is how births are changing in the municipalities in Wallonia

More often settled in Walloon Brabant and in Liège, the share of this age group in the overall Walloon population has decreased slightly (-0.2%) over the past ten years… except in the districts of Nivelles and Verviers. No wonder then that it is in these two corners of Wallonia that the authorities have identified the highest proportion of octogenarians, nonagenarians and centenarians in the south of the country.

From Chaudfontaine to Rixensart via Spa, Waterloo and La Hulpe, Walloon seniors over the age of 80 each time represent more than 7% of the local population. And a sign that they feel good there, their percentage is also progressing in these localities, sometimes approaching 2% in 10 years as in Bullange.
