Agriculture

The prices for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and Co. have risen massively lately. One reason for this is the high energy costs, but higher costs for feed, fuel and fertilizers also lead to higher producer prices. The changed weather conditions do not make the farmers’ work any easier either.

For the vegetable farmers, the work is only just beginning. The first vegetables and salads are being harvested and will soon be available for purchase. But the industry has not had an easy time.

Corona-related challenges prevailed for two years, such as the difficult entry of harvest workers or problems with the delivery of seeds. In 2022, the Ukraine conflict and high energy prices also hit domestic agriculture.

Higher costs for feed, fuel and fertilizer

Customers feel that too. Higher energy, fuel, animal feed and fertilizer costs lead to higher producer prices.

Another problem in the past was the changed weather conditions: Wet and drought periods lasted longer. Depending on the culture, the sowing or planting of the seedlings has been delayed or growth has slowed down. Nevertheless, the vegetable season is starting with early varieties and the first salads from the field.

No complete failures among farmers

Apart from the financial and global political challenges, 2022 was a stable year from an agricultural point of view. The crop yields of the individual products were average. There were no complete failures in any area, although individual farmers had to cope with severe damage due to weather conditions such as hail.
