Narrative in professional practice: clinical encounters.
On May 4, 2023, it was held in the city of Bs As with a hybrid modality,
(in person and remotely) the VII international conference of the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires and First
Conference of the Argentine Society of Narrative Medicine SAMEN, The narrative in the
professional practice: encounter clinic.
The day had the participation of national and international guests and the presence
sustained of more than eighty registered between both modalities. It was proposed as a
space to give voice to professionals, thinkers, patients and artists linked to health care
health and generate dialogues to nurture the clinical encounter.
An invitation to reflect together on the place of Narrative Medicine in the formation of
health professionals, share relevant experiences developed in our
different contexts, propose possible ways of putting it into practice, explore its contributions
to the relationship with patients and colleagues and its effectiveness in favoring good meetings. A
opportunity to recognize the transforming power of literature in the care of
health, the role of narratives in the field of Bioethics and reconsider the dimensions of
the truth in the query.
So it was that the first table, Training spaces, a window to the narratives,
coordinated by Ignacio Usandivaras, included presentations by Ricardo Ricci, doctor
clinician, professor at the National University of Tucumán; Pamela Jofre pediatrician and
Coordinator of the Narrative Medicine Laboratory of the University of Valparaíso, Chile;
Javier Pollán and Paula Gutièrrez Head and staff professional, respectively, of the Service of
HIBA Medical Clinic, participants of the Medical Health Program for the Residence and the
Ateneo de Humanities of the service. This first segment showed different trajectories,
achievements and challenges in undergraduate and postgraduate university activities and spaces of thought
reflective for health professionals, in the field of Narrative Medicine.
The next table Author’s stories: “An ideal presence” coordinated by Elizabeth Gothelf
It was made up of Eduardo Berti, an Argentine writer living in France, Liliana Rodriguez
doctor and Dolores Castro Montiel, graduate nurse, both from the Palliative Care team
of the HIBA. Berti recounted his experiences when writing his novel “An ideal presence” on purpose
from a writing residency at the Rouen hospital in France. In turn, the professionals who
they had worked on that text in spaces for professional reflection, they shared with the author
meaningful experiences with patients, showing how to write and tell lived stories, in
health contexts so hard and challenging, can make sense of the exercise of the profession
and even of existence itself.
With the objective of sharing the care experience of professionals who carry out their activity
with a narrative approach in different settings, the table Narrative Practices in
health, coordinated by Silvia Carrió, was attended by Jorge Janson, clinical doctor and
HIBA hypertensologist; Beatriz Carballeira, Clinical Physician at Hospital El Cruce, Victoria
Franco and Ana Diaz, music therapist and nursing graduate from the Therapy Unit
HIBA intensive. The guests helped us understand the importance of getting to know the
patients and knowing their history, the value of asking questions and taking nothing for granted, and the effect
powerful of spontaneous, soft, delicate and opportune gestures.
