Machu Picchu, a pre-Columbian site of the Inca Empire, is located at an altitude of 2,430 meters on a mountain peak above the Urubamba Valley, 80 km from the city of Cusco, Peru. Machu Picchu is known as the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ and is believed to have been built in the 15th century. The Urubamba River, a tributary of the Amazon River, flows around it.

Abandoned less than a hundred years following its construction, the city lay unnoticed by the outside world for centuries. After 1911, the area became an attraction for tourists and historians.

The Machu Picchu Inca Trail is the most famous trail in Peru and is one of the most popular hiking trails in Peru. This trail consists of three trails namely Molepata, Classic and One Day. Of these, Molepata is the longest and highest pass. It is located at an altitude of 4,200 meters above sea level.
The route joins the classic route at Warmianuska Pass. Located in the Andes Mountains, the trail passes through a variety of Andean environments, including cloud forest and alpine tundra. Passing numerous settlements, tunnels and many Incan ruins, the trail ends at the Sun Gate on Machu Picchu Mountain.
Trekkers usually take four to five days to complete the classic Inca Trail. Two day trekking packages are also available. The route starts from Cusco in Urubamba. The main attraction here is the area called Patallakta, which was used by the Inca people in ancient times for religious and ritual ceremonies.
The classic Inca route joins the Molepata route at the village of Weilabamba.
A small lake called Kochapata, which is home to deer, is also passed, and many view points can be seen. Later, you can reach Machu Picchu by crossing Sayakhmarca, known as the Steep City, Fuyupatamarca, famous for its campsite and ruins, and the Wilkanuta River.
Machu Picchu is built in the old Incan style with smooth stone walls. The main buildings here are Intihotana, Surya Kshetra and Three Window Chamber.
Due to the influx of tourists, the Peruvian government imposed many restrictions on the route and the ancient city, when it came to harming the environment and ruins. The most notable of these is the quota system introduced in 2001. Only a certain number of people are allowed to hike the Inca Trail each day, including hikers, porters, and guides. A permit must be obtained in advance. As of 2016, 500 permits are issued every day. Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, usually in October. Permits can only be obtained through government registered tour operators. They are not transferable.
Trekkers must also be accompanied by a guide.
In 1981, Peru declared Machu Picchu a protected historical monument, and in 1983 UNESCO included it in the World Heritage List.
