People have always enjoyed filming in Lower Austria. In the forest (as in Elisabeth Scharang’s village and relationship story of the same name, which was largely filmed in the Waldviertel this year) and in the castle (as in Margarethe von Trotta’s film adaptation of life and literature “Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert”, which the star director also filmed in Ernstbrunner Castle last year). And in the Semmeringer Südbahn Hotel or in the (Mauerbacher) Charterhouse or in the (St. Pöltner) ice rink too.
And promoted? The shooting, i.e. the film, hasn’t just been made since Lower Austria’s Film Commission, or LAFC (Lower Austrian Film Commission) was launched in 2012. It doesn’t just network and publish. She also recommends. Namely what the country supports financially. That was a total of 3.3 million euros in the (film) year that has just ended – for television and cinema films, for feature films and documentaries, but also for art and experimental films, for (artwork) cinemas and summer cinemas. This year, 52 projects applied for the so-called “Great Film Funding”, and the Lower Austrian state government – on the recommendation of its film commission – also approved 37 (in addition to 47 art film projects). With: 1.5 million euros in funding.
Some of them are currently being filmed (like Sebastian Brameshuber’s Autobahn documentary “Given the current traffic situation”), some were filmed this year (like Evi Romen’s relationship and youth drama, which was also shot in Klosterneuburg). „Happyland“). And some are already on the start list for 2024, like Josef Hader’s second film project following “Wilden Maus,” which was also shot in Lower Austria: “Andrea is getting a divorce”.
The projects alone have more than doubled in the last 20 years. While there were 51 in 2000, in 2022 there were already 105 (35 of which were part of the “Great Film Funding” alone and amounted to 1.269 million euros, plus 48 art film projects funded with around 300,000 euros). The next ones will be on the table at the next meeting of Lower Austria’s film commission in February. And the next budget for Lower Austria’s film scene should remain as high in 2024 as it was in 2023. As announced, the Austrian Film Academy will not be celebrating the next film award in Grafenegg in 2024. But in Vienna.
