On the second day of this exhibition dedicated to digital technology, the 43rd edition of GITEX Global 2023, African personalities and decision-makers from the digital sector gathered to share their experiences and discuss investment opportunities in Africa.
The discussions largely focused on the development prospects of the continent, this part of the world experiencing rapid demographic, economic and digital growth.
Ghita Mezzour, alongside Sahar Nasr, former Minister of Investment and Cooperation of Egypt, Aurélie Adam Soule, Minister of Digital and Digitization of Benin, and Kadri Opfemi Ahmzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos State in Nigeria, shared the opportunities and prospects for development in their respective countries.
Regarding Morocco, Ghita Mezzour declared that the vision of development, carried by King Mohammed VI, has propelled the Moroccan model to the forefront on the African scene. She also highlighted the recent international ranking which places the port of Tanger Med fourth among the largest container ports in the world, emphasizing that the Kingdom is among the top twenty most active countries in terms of maritime connectivity.
The minister also highlighted infrastructure improvements in Morocco over the past two decades, including 1,800 km of railways, air connectivity through 16 airports (including 12 international), and status as the largest exporter of automobile parts. of the European Union.
These infrastructures, she specifies, have allowed Morocco to host the largest events such as COP22 in 2016, GITEXAfrica last May and more recently the Annual Meetings of the WB and the IMF. Ghita Mezzour, as representative of Morocco, also welcomed the award of co-organization of the 2030 Football World Cup to Morocco, alongside Spain and Portugal and that of the World Cup. Africa of Nations 2025.
The session focused on the transformative potential of communications infrastructure, both physical and virtual, as well as mobility in the cities of the future. These projects have the power to make life easier for citizens, improve the functioning of businesses, while stimulating economic growth, freeing up natural resources and creating new employment opportunities for the local population.
Highlighting Morocco’s advances in the areas of digital and technological communication, Ghita Mezzour noted that the Internet connectivity rate reaches 90% in Morocco, with initiatives aimed at improving administrative services and training more than 8,000 IT engineers each year. year. “We aim to double this figure each year, in partnership with schools and businesses, by offering training in coding and cybersecurity,” she explains.
Ultimately, Ghita Mezzour insisted on the importance of the development of new technologies to strengthen Morocco’s position as a popular destination for companies wishing to invest in the IT sector.
