In tribute to the artist Francisque Poulbot, the Arts and Culture association of Les Barils (Eure) is opening, at the beginning of December 2023, the temporary Embassy of the Republic of Montmartre in Les Barils.

This exceptional event highlights the legacy of Pierre Aubry, great-nephew of Poulbot and grandfather of Jules Privé, mayor of Gournay-Le-Guérin (Eure) and entrepreneur in Les Barils.

Family archives

The Aubry family, legatee of this immense designer, illustrator, poster designer and humanist, reveals part of their family archives here.

Born in 1879, Francisque Poulbot is a French poster designer, designer and illustrator. It began to be published in the press around 1900. He settled in 1914 in the “maquis” of Montmartre, when this district of Paris was a village of makeshift cabins, occupied by a miserable population.

Left for the front and discharged the following year for health reasons, he signed patriotic posters and postcards, which led to his being placed under house arrest during the occupation.

Illustrator for the famous newspaper L’assiette au Beurre, Francisque Poulbot also creates posters for Le Bon Marché, Le Moulin de la Galette, as well as illustrations for literature such as Jules Renard’s novel Poil de Carotte or Les Misérables, by Victor Hugo.

In 1923, to help needy children in Montmartre, he opened Les P’tits Poulbots, a dispensary on rue Lepic, later transformed into an association which still exists.

Thanks to him, his wife Léona, a few artist friends and volunteer doctors, the poor of Montmartre will benefit from free consultations for infants, donations of layettes, clothes, sterilized milk and even medicines.

Likewise, the artist supports the National League Against Slums, which fights for the elimination of unsanitary homes and the construction of cheap housing.

Dolls

Finally, anxious to beautify children’s daily lives, in 1908 he invented eighteen dolls, each typical of a district of Paris (Îl-de-France). Two of them, Nénette and Rintintin, will be reinvented as lucky charms by the war godmothers to support the soldiers who went to the front.

The artist nicknamed with the heart of gold is above all a remarkable humorous and satirical illustrator, with a childish and mischievous trait.

A witness to his time, he evokes social injustices in his work, while sketching daily life in Parisian neighborhoods, school, family, motherhood and even the lives of children under occupation.

Unique and unusual

This exhibition at Les Barils, unique and unusual, opens a window on the extraordinary universe that the name of Poulbot carries, which has become a common designation for the Parisian kid.

A certain number of drawings, photographs, artists’ proofs, poster projects and sound documents will be presented as well as an INA documentary Les enfants de la butte, directed by Jack Pinoteau and which will be broadcast throughout the ‘exposure.
